Trailer Running Lights Not Working On a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
Question:
My turn and brake lights work but my running lights do not work. I have a utility trailer with a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan SE both using a Flat 4-Pole Connector. I do not know if the van side is factory or after market, but the trailer side is factory and all lights work correctly when being towed by another vehicle.

Since your trailer is working correctly with another vehicle the problem most likely lies in the wiring of the Grand Caravan. Turn the tail lights on and use a circuit tester, item # 3808 if needed, to check the trailer connector. If the taillight circuit is not working, you will need to follow the wiring back into the vehicle until you find the converter, the black box that the trailer wiring is coming out of. Test the brown wire on the trailer side of the converter. If the wire is working here you will need to find the short between the converter and the trailer connector. If you do not have power on the trailer side of the converter check the brown wire on the vehicle side of the converter. If you have power here, and not on the trailer side, there is a short in the converter, and the converter will need to be replaced. If there is not power on the brown wire going into the converter then there is a problem coming from the vehicle wiring. Check the connector and make sure it is plugged in all the way and that the locking tab is not broken.
Usually there is not a problem with the taillight circuit in the converter because the converter simply sends the taillight signal through the converter and does not have to convert its signal. You could test to see if the converter is bad by using a jumper wire to bypass the converter box. Only do this to test the converter do not do this as a permanent fix. It will tell you if the converter is shorted and will need to be replaced with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118376. You need to replace the converter if it is bad to protect your vehicles sensitive circuitry.
