Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2004 Ford Explorer Towing Different Trailers

Question:

Im having a hard time figuring out which weight distribution hitch to buy. I will be renting a trailer this year and buying a trailer next year. I have a 2004 Ford Explorer, V6, 4X4 with tow package. It has a towing capacity of 5500 lbs. The trailer that I am renting has a dry hitch weight of 440 lbsaccording to the paper work the rental place gave me, its a 2010 gulfstream m-20trd. The trailers that I am looking at to buy next year say they have a dry hitch weight from 350 to 400 lbs. Which hitch should I get? Thanks

It can be difficult to select the correct weight distribution system when you do not already have the trailer because we do not want to go off of the dry hitch weight alone. We will want the total tongue weight of your towing setup which includes the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer, plus the weight of any cargo loaded in your Ford Explorer behind the rear axle.

Since you do not have the trailers yet, the best thing to do is to find the dry weight of the trailer. Next, approximate the weight of everything you will be carrying in the trailer and add that to the dry trailer weight. On travel trailers, the tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. Once you have determined the tongue weight, add the weight of any luggage or gear you plan on carrying in the cargo area of your Explorer.

If you find that your total tongue weight will remain under 550 lbs, then the Pro Series Weight Distribution System, # PS49901, will work great for you. If your tongue weight will exceed 550 lbs, then you can step up to the next system, which is part # PS49582. This system has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 750 lbs.

I have attached help articles on trailer tongue weight and weight distribution. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out. These systems come with a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball, so you will want to make sure that is compatible with the trailer coupler. If you need a 2 inch hitch ball, you can use part # A-90.
