Parts Needed to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2006 Jeep Wrangler X

Question:

Do you have specific instructions about installing this controller on a 2006 Jeep Wrangler? Besides the unit itself, is there a wiring harness that I should also order? Thanks.

In order to install a trailer brake controller on your 2006 Jeep Wrangler X, you will first need to install a 4-Way trailer connector (unless the Jeep already has one) # 118409.

Then with the 4-Way installed, or if you already have one, you would need to install the 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. This provides the 7-Way and wiring needed to hardwire in the brake controller. If your Jeep already has a 7-Way then you will not need this part and you can skip to the section below on models with factory 7-Way.

I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you. For the Curt brake controller you will also need wiring harness # C51515 which is the universal pig tail for hardwire installations.

If the Jeep does already have a 7-Way then you will not need ETBC7. Instead you will need installation kit # 5506. It is possible that on models with the factory 7-Way there will be a brake output wire behind the driver side kick panel, left of the brake pedal. It could be light green or possibly blue and will be coiled up behind the panel. But there are no custom fit brake controller wiring harnesses that will fit your Jeep.

This wire would attach to the brake controller blue wire. If that wire is not present then you would need to attach one end of the wire included with 5506, attach it to the blue brake controller wire, then route it through the firewall, under the Jeep, and to the back of the 7-Way to the 7 o' clock position. Avoid areas that can pinch or burn the wire when routing it.

The brake controller white wire needs to connect to the negative battery cable. The brake controller black wire will need to go first to the included circuit breaker AUX post, then from the BAT post to the positive battery terminal.

The red wire will need to attach to the cold side of the brake switch. Use a circuit tester such as # PTW2992 to test the brake switch wires located above the brake pedal. It should be a white/tan wire and it should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed.
