Weight Distribution/Sway Control for TT With 6500 GVWR Towed By 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel

Question:

I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel which has a 6500 GVWR and can tow up to 7400 lbs. I will be towing a travel trailer which has a 6550 GVWR. I do not intend to exceed these ratings. The trailer has a UVW of 5674 and a hitch weight of 624.The Jeep also has some form of Trailer Sway Contro that I am uncertain of. What would you recommend for a hitch package?

The first step in choosing a weight distribution system is to determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To this figure, add the weight of anything stowed behind the rear axle in the cargo area of your Grand Cherokee. I refer to this figure at the total tongue weight (TTW). I will link you to an article that describes how to determine your TTW.

If your TTW is under 800 lbs, I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System, part # RP66083. This system is identical to the one you referenced, but it includes the weight distributing shank. If you find your TTW is above 800 lbs, you will want to go a step up with the Reese Strait-Line # RP66084 which also includes the shank.

An OEM sway control system will typically momentarily apply the right or left rear brake in response to trailer sway. I have not heard any reports about its effectiveness, but in my opinion a system that forces the trailer to stay in line behind the trailer and stops trailer sway before it can start (like the Strait-Line) is preferable to one that reacts to it once it has already begun.

As mentioned, both W/D systems mentioned include the shank, but the appropriately sized trailer ball is sold separately. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90 or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball.
