Anti-Sway Cage Option for a 10 Year Old Thule Trunk Mount Bike Rack

Question:

I have a Thule trunk mounted 2-bike carrier that is about 10 years old. It is one of the two lowest priced models, not sure which one. Last year I ordered the anti sway cages and found that they do not attach. I am guessing that I need to replace the stay put cradles and buy two ripple straps to make them work. Is this correct and is it easily accomplished? Alternatively is there and older version of the antisway cage that will work and is still available? For example will the Thule 955 ant-sway cage which is built for htiches work on my old probably Passage trunk mounted model? Thank you

I spoke with my contact at Thule and he informed me that they did not make anti-sway cradles for their older bike racks. The best solution for you would be to completely replace the cradles on your bike rack with newer cradles that accept anti-sway cages.

Since your bike rack already has cradles, you can replace them with the Thule Stay-Put Cradle, # 853-7887. You could then add the Stay-Put Anti-Sway Cage, # 853-7758, and straps, # 852-3006-001. Each of these items are sold individually, so you would want one strap per cradle and one strap per anti-sway cage.

The Stay-Put cradles will fit all Thule trunk mount bike racks as long as it was not the older base model rack that did not come with cradles at all. All of the Thule trunk mount bike racks were made with 1 inch diameter arms. The older base model came with plastic coated arm which were larger in diameter.
