Can the Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Installation kit be Moved 1/2 Inch Forward on a 2003 Dodge Ram
Question:
Just wanted to get clarification on the dimension specified in the instructions from the rear gate. I did a Curt rail kit a couple years ago. It seems like front rail would fit better under the box if everything was about a 1/2 further rearward from the specified distance in the instructions. thanks.

You will want to install the rear rail in Curt 5th wheel installation kit # C16420-204 at the specified distance of 26-3/4 inches on a short bed 2003 Ram. The rail needs to be in that specific location because the brackets that attach to the frame need to go in a certain spot on the frame. If you moved the rail you would either have to move the brackets, and they would not fit properly, or move the rail and then it would not line up with the bracket.
The rail placement also will put the center of the hitch in the proper position, centered over the rear axle. Having it more forward then the instructions specify could cause clearance issues between the truck cab and trailer.
