Do I Need a Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch for a 2019 Ford F-250 Short Bed?

Question:

Hello, I have a 2019 Ford F-250 with a 6.8ft bed with the Reese above bed fifth wheel kit already installed. I do not have the fifth wheel hitch for it. I am in the process of of purchasing a 2024 Dutchmen Astoria 3173RLP. My question is: do I need the fifth wheel hitch with the slider or would the standard hitch work? I am currently looking at the Curt #C16140 and Curt #C16541. Thank you!

Congrats on the new trailer! You will need a sliding 5th wheel hitch. A standard fixed hitch like the Curt A20 item # C16140 won't provide you with the necessary clearance you'll need. You'll end up running the nose on your Dutchman into the back of your F-250's cab.

Since you already have a set of Reese 5th wheel rails installed, the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider item # C16541 will be a great addition to your set up. The Curt A20 has a 20,000 lbs capacity and will give you 12" of travel front to back for making tight turns and backing into your camping spot.

To make towing with a 5th wheel easier, I recommend adding the Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom Wiring Harness item # C57008. This harness puts a 7-way connector in the bed of your truck and allows you to keep the one on your bumper. This makes hooking up to your 5th wheel trailer easier and more convenient.
