Roof Cargo Box Recommendation for a 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD for Hatch Clearance

Question:

we have a 2023 4runner TRD offroad premium that has a rod vault already on top. we are looking at the SportRack Horizon Rooftop Cargo Box. our crossbars are Thule Wingbar Evo Model number 711420. I texted already with one etrailer expert who said the SportRack would work, width-wise, but we saw some issue in the QandA about how the cargo box may or may not get in the way of the back hatch. the current distance from the seam of our back hatch to the center midpoint of the Thule Wingbar is 52 inches. It can be moved an additional 1/4 inch. is this enough space?

The SportRack Horizon Rooftop Cargo Box # SR7011 requires a clearance of 52-1/2" from the center of the front crossbar to the seam at the back hatch and roof so this cargo box is literally 1/4" too long. The shape of the rear hatch on your 2023 Toyota 4Runner TRD might still allow it to open without making contact but since it's already looking like this won't fit properly I recommend checking out a different box instead.

The Malone Profile18B Rooftop Cargo Box # MPG911 is a great alternative that's a little shorter, but since it sits higher it actually has more space inside (18 cu ft when compared to the 11 cu ft of the SportRack). This requires are least 46" of clearance to fit so you won't have any issues with this hitting your reach hatch.

Attached is a review video of this box on a 2015 4Runner for you to check out!
