Recommendation For Reducing Sag On 2012 Dodge Ram Quad Cab Towing 4000 LB Trailer

Question:

I have a small 20foot travel trailer 4000 lbs. and last year switched vehicles I always pulled it with a std. draw bar with a Ford Expedition std. suspension that pulled it fine with no sag, now I have a 2012 Dodge Ram Quad cab and when I pulled it this past summer I noticed a decent sag in the rear. Would you recommend switching from the std. draw bar to a weight distribution hitch or do you think the Timbren suspension helpers in the rear would do the trick? Its not like they are much different in price.

If the weight of the trailer you are towing is more than 50 percent of the weight of your towing vehicle a weight distribution system is recommended. I found that your 2012 Dodge Ram Quad Cab weighs approximately 6000 to 6200 lbs, and since you said the trailer weighs 4000 lbs, a weight distribution system would work well for you.

The Timbren Suspension System, would help level and stabilize your Dodge Ram but when you are towing a trailer that is causing the sag, the problem would not be eliminated with the Timbren system. Alll of the trailer tongue weight would still be on the ball and the hitch. It may keep the rear end of the vehicle level but may cause a rough ride.

There should be a plate or label somewhere on the trailer that lists the tongue weight. The tongue weight is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. You would need to add the weight of cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle to the tongue weight to come up with the number you need to work with when choosing a system. For a trailer weighing 4000 pounds at 10 to 15 percent that would be 400 to 600 pounds.

I would recommend a system that falls in the 400 to 800 lb range, like the Reese Round Bar Weight Distribution Kit with Shank, part # RP67509. You would want a weight distribution system that has a tongue weight capacity range where your trailer tongue weight would fall in the middle. That is the case with this system and its 400 to 800 pound range.

You will want to add the right sized ball for the coupler on your trailer. For a 2 inch ball I recommend part # A-90, and for a 2-5/16 inch ball I recommend part # 19286.

I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains weight distribution.
