Can a 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx Safely Tow a Rockwood Geo Pro 19FS Travel Trailer Camper?

Question:

The ball mount on my Subaru Outback Onyx has the top of the ball at 18 which is perfect for my utility trailer. However I am about to rent a Rockwood GeoPro 19FS camper. I do need a new ball 2 5/16 but do I need a different drop? Someone on the GeoPro forum said theirs was 17. Assuming the car will drop under weight, is my current drop correct? Should I consider an adjustable? Car is rated at 3500 lbs turbo engine, etc.

You are not going to be able to safely tow the Rockwood Geo Pro 19FS with your 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx. The dry weight of the Geo Pro when it leaves the factory appears to be around 3,300-3,400lbs with a tongue weight around 500lbs depending on the year. By the time they add propane, a battery and any camping equipment this is going to put you over the 3,500lbs and likely closer to 600lbs of tongue weight which both are over the towing capability of your Subaru.

If you are able to find a lighter trailer you are in the right ballpark for considering a ball mount to use. Being within an inch difference is going to work well for your Onyx. Since you are not able to use a weight distribution hitch you will want to consider adding Coil SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs # CSS-1125R to reduce rear end sag. It the trailer utilizes a Sway Bar # 17200 you can use the Bracket # RP26003 and Ball # C36BR to also use the sway bar.
