As long as they are properly rated you can use cables or chains for your trailer, although I will say that chains are typically used for trailering while cables are used more for flat tow situations so I would default to chains.

The Tow Ready Safety Chain Kit with Clevis Hooks # 49150 is a solid option that's rated for up to 16K trailers and they measure 44" long. When choosing safety chain length you need to have enough room to be able to cross the chains as well as be able to take tight turns without the chains max-ing out. So to determine the correct length I recommend hooking your truck up to your trailer and making a tight turn so you can measure the distance between where the safety chain connects to both the truck and trailer to make sure the 44" is a good length.
