Will Curt 2 Inch to 1-1/4 Inch Adapter Work With Dr. Tray Bike Rack

Question:

Will this adapter work to mount a 1 1/4” Yakima Dr. Tray with EZ + 1 to a 2” hitch receiver? I just bought the adapter and the Speedknob on the rack tightens solid inside the adapter, but I don’t want to stress to the shaft on the rack. I’ve had this rack for 4 years, but really only used it once each year for vacation. I now have a 2023 Outback and I’m getting a 2” hitch receiver installed in two days Subaru won’t install a 1 1/4”. I really don’t want to get a new rack. Any advice in general, or on how to assess the strength of the shaft?

Technically yes, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 2" (Class III) to 1-1/4" - 4" Long # C45770 will work with your Yakima Dr. Tray bike rack, though the adapter will reduce the tongue weight of your hitch by 50%, and the Dr. Tray instructions say not to use the rack with a hitch extender or adapter.

So I have to recommend against using an adapter per Yakima, and there isn't a way to assess the strength of the shaft of the rack. Will it probably be just fine, especially since you are only using it once a year? Yes, I would say so. But since you asked for advice, I would honestly go with a new rack just to be safe. I know you don't want to (neither would I) but that's really the best recommendation I can offer. You can likely sell the Dr. Tray to make up for the costs and get a less expensive but still quality bike rack like the Hollywood Racks Destination Bike Rack # HLY94FR.
