Should Hitch Ball Move Inside Coupler When Towing Trailer

Question:

Should the latch on the Demco 12563 coupler have any movement or space between the ball and the latch? Im experiencing a jerk when I accelerate from a stop and a jerk when I slow down to stop. Im using a 5000 lb. 2 inch ball with a 2inch shank, I inch diameter. I checked the hitch and here is no movement between the receiver and hitch, Can it be adjusted or should I use a different 2 inch ball? Just scratching my head. Thank you for your time

The Demco # DM12563 is not made to be adjusted, but what you're experiencing is normal. There should be room for play to allow for the normal movement of the trailer. If it was tight it would not be able to move and pivot as intended. If you want to limit the jerk you feel in your vehicle, you might want to consider the Curt RockerBall Shock Absorbing 2" Hitch Ball # C40047. This will help reduce the shock from rapid braking and acceleration.

Just to make sure it is working properly, you can test the attachment with your trailer jack. Use the jack to lift the nose of the trailer while the coupler is connected to the ball. As long as the coupler remains locked on the hitch ball you can be confident that it is secure.
