Why is a wiring harness needed on a 2017 Hyundai Tucson When the trailer wiring kit comes with a 4 wire plug with wires to splice into the harness. If I use the 4 wire plug can I damage the electrical systems

If your 2017 Hyundai Tuscon doesn't already have a 4 way flat trailer plug at the back of the vehicle near the hitch, then you will need to install one so that the trailer's 4 way plug can connect to your vehicle. You can use a kit like T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118501 which does NOT require any splicing since it utilizes your Tuscon's factory connectors.

If you are referring to using a universal trailer wiring harness to tap into the Tuscon's wiring system, then I don't recommend this since we haven't confirmed a universal fit; I would go with the custom-fit option mentioned above, which is 100% confirmed to fit.

Then your trailer's 4 way, such as Wesbar 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Harness - 20' Long # 002220, can simply plug into the T-One wiring harness connector on your vehicle.
