Low-Profile Class S Snow Chains for 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van 2500

Question:

I would like to get some tire chains\cables for the vehicle listed in the subject line. It says in the owners manual that the cables must be low profile for clearance purposes. We will need something fairly robust and easy to apply scientists arent exactly mechanically inclined. What would you recommend? If you need photos let me know. The tire size is LT245\75R\16. Thank you!

The low-profile-type of snow chains referred to in the manual for your 2013 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 Van with LT245\75R\16 tires are referred to as Class S snow chains. This type of chain is designed for vehicles whose wheel wells have limited clearance and where standard chains might interfere with brake or suspension components. Please note the chains you referenced, part # PW2029C, do not fit your tire size.

The two linked articles on snow chains will provide you with some useful background information on the types of chains available as well as state-by-state regulations governing their use. I also included a link to our main page for Class S snow chains for your tire size where you can see a range of compatible chains. Please note that all of the tire chains offered for your tire size are intended only for on-road use. These vary in cost, construction and in the amount of effort required to install them.

For example, the Glacier chain set # PW2021C shown in the linked video offers a low-cost option for occasional use and requires manual installation and tension adjustment using rubber adjusters # PW99.

It is permissible to use one or two pairs of chains on a vehicle (two or all four tires) unless specifically prohibited by the vehicle manufacturer. Generally the drive wheels are the priority, whether front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, but it is often also possible to use them on all four wheels. This will provide better traction for steering and braking.

Please also note that all snow chains require reduced driving speeds, usually 25-40 mph, and none should be driven on bare pavement.

I suggest a review of your vehicle owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding use of tire chains.
