Recommended 13" Tire Upgrade for 1991 Caravan Trailer
Question:
I have an old caravan 91 model that has 13 inch wheels It is written like this on the compliance plate. 13 x 4.5 The axle load capacity is 1000. It also says recommended maximum vehicle operating speed 80km/hr I want to be able to do 100klms an hour on the freeway so I would like to want to upgrade these tyres. I read your article about changing from 13 to 15inch you mentioned the axle rating of 2000. So is the trailer axle to light to upgrade?

Helpful Expert Reply:
I actually don't recommend going with a larger sized tire. 100 km/hr is about 62 mph which is met and exceeded on pretty much every tire in the industry at this point in time.
The 13" x 4.5" you see has to do with the wheel size alone so if you want to keep that same wheel then I recommend upgrading the tire to the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208 which has a weight capacity of 1,710 lbs at 65 psi and an 81 mph (about 130 km/hr) speed rating.
