Troubleshooting A Replacement Stereo Install In A 1977 Avion Trailer

Question:

I have a 1977 Avion trailer that I’m trying to install a new aftermarket CD/radio. The problem is I only have a red 12 volt supply and No yellow ignition wire. The new Kenwood stereo will not turn on. I’ve tried just the red wire to the 12 volts ,then just the yellow wire to the 12 volts , snd both the red and yellow wires together to the 12 volts. Nothing works.

If the stereo is anything like the typical RV stereos that we carry then it most likely also has a fuse either plugged into the back of it or on the power wire. I would check the fuse to ensure it's not blown and then check that you have a full 12 volts of power coming in to the stereo with a multimeter # PT89ZR. I would also make sure that you're connecting the correct wires to the power source. There isn't a real standard when it comes to wire colors so if you didn't check the diagram you could be connecting the wrong wires.

You should be connecting the constant power wire and ignition trigger wire to your power source so that the stereo has power. If the stereo still doesn't power on then it would be an issue with the stereo and I would try to return it. If this is the case and you'd like a replacement then I'd just need to know the cutout hole size to find a compatible match.
