Is There any Benefit to Using Sidewinder Pin Box with Long Bed Truck

Question:

I have a 8 foot bed and just bought a 5th wheel camper with the Reese sidewinder. Is it okay to use the sidewinder with the 8 foot bed and if so would you allow it to pivot or lock it out? I have a BandW companion hitch mounted in the stock ford prep package or puck system. The previous owner was towing with a Reese 5th wheel hitch. Do I need different wedges?

Sidewinder pin boxes offer more benefits than just short bed turning clearance so I would definitely recommend utilizing yours by allowing it to pivot. You'll find that it's a lot easier to back up with the Sidewinder and the trailer tracks a lot better around corners (you won't have to swing out as wide when making sharp turns).

The correct wedge kit you'd need is the part # RP74FR if you have a 20k Sidewinder as the Reese wedge would not fit due to head/jaw shape differences.
