Weight Distribution System With Sway Control For 2006 Dodge Dakota Towing A Camper

Question:

We are looking at this Reese Hitch model RP66082 and we have a 2006 dodge Dakota and camper that according to manufacture weighs dry weight at 4700 lb. and est. gross weight of 6900 and tongue weight 568 lb. according to the reviews this looks like the preferred one to get as for anti sway and equalizer. We like the anti sway better than the friction type. Question is 1. what is your opinion on this to be the proper hitch for this system. If not what do you recommend 2. or if a different hitch can the same anti sway be used as I see there is just that part you can buy.

When considering a weight distribution system for your 2006 Dodge Dakota and camper, you will have two weight ratings, the gross trailer weight and the tongue weight. The gross trailer weight is the weight of the fully loaded camper in its actual towing condition. The tongue weight refers to the tongue weight of your trailer added to the weight of the cargo that sits behind the rear axle of your truck.

The Dual Cam system will prevent trailer sway before it can begin. The Reese Strait-Line system, part # RP66082, is rated for tongue weights ranging from 200-600 lbs. Ideally, you want to find a system that puts your camper tongue weight as close as possible to the center of the range of the system.

If your tongue weight is in the neighborhood of 400 lbs but less than 600 lbs, part # RP66072 system would be a good choice. If your total tongue weight is around 600 lbs but less than 800 lbs, then part # RP66083 Strait-Line system would work well for you.

You will want to add the right sized ball for the coupler on your trailer. For a 2 inch ball I recommend part # A-90, and for a 2-5/16 inch ball I recommend part # 19286.
