Stromberg Carlson Cargo Capacity with 350 lb Tongue Weight Trailer Hitch
Question:
Question about the 23x59 Stromberg Carlson Cargo Carrier… I have an Outback with a 350# tongue weight. Am I correct in thinking that I have about 300 pounds of available cargo capacity on this rack since it’s about 40 pounds? Is there a variable that I am missing? How does the distance from the car play into this equation? Thanks!

You are correct; since the 23x59 Stromberg Carlson Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # CC-100 weighs in at 39 lbs it means you'll be able to load up to 311 lbs of cargo on it without exceeding the 350 lb tongue weight rating of the trailer hitch on your Subaru Outback.
Cargo carriers are designed with the distance and such in mind so you won't need to add or adjust anything else. The only time the distance comes into play is if you were using an extender like part # e88YR. Since this moves the cargo further back and places more torque on the hitch receiver you need to cut the safe tongue weight capacity in half to 175 lbs (136 lbs once you subtract the weight of the carrier).
Hope this helps make tongue weight ratings a bit more clearer. Let me know if you have any additional questions!
