How Necessary Are the Glacier Rubber Tensioners # PW99 When Using Glacier Tire Chains # PWPLC1146
Question:
Should I buy the PW99 rubber connectors for this size of chain? Also many years ago we had used this type of chain and it came with a spreader I sort of shaped piece of metal we would attach both sides of end of the chain to the spreader and then put the spreader on top of the wheel. we would then drive around so the chain would be distributed around the chain?

Rubber Snow Chain Tensioners such as the Glacier # PW99 that you referenced will often simplify the installation and use of snow chains such as the Glacier Square-Link Snow Tire Chains # PWPLC1146. However, before installing any type of snow chain you should consult your vehicle owners manual (or your local dealership) to confirm whether there are any restrictions regarding use of tire chains on your vehicle. Many passenger vehicles are limited to using low-profile Class S chains, such as the Glacier # PWPLC1146.
Any given size of snow chain will fit more than one tire size. This means that there is often some chance the fit of your chains on your tires may include a bit of slack. The rubber tensioner will help take up any excess play in the chains. This is important since a secure fit will help prevent premature wear of the chains, minimize potential damage to your vehicle, and also help keep them centered for the best ride quality.
Your vehicle can be equipped with any of three OEM tire sizes: 235/50-19, 235/55-18 or 235/60-17. (We currently have no chains to fit the 235/50-19 size.) Using the link provided you can (after checking your manual) select the tire size you have to see all compatible chains. The chains you referenced, # PWPLC1146, are a fit for 235/55-18 tires. If you have 235/60-17 tires you can use the other link provided to see chains that will fit that size.
Once you have confirmed your tire size you can filter the product results by any of several different characteristics such as on-road or off-road use, style of chain, type of installation, type of construction, etc.
I have linked several helpful articles that review much useful information about the types of and applications for snow chains. Review of these may be helpful as you consider your options and preferences.
There are some premium chains that offer automatic adjustment but these may not be offered for your tire size. Please note that no tire chains should be driven on bare pavement and all require reduced driving speed.
