Correct Grease Caps for an Axle Equipped with a Grease Zerk

Question:

My Trailer has a grease nipple/zerk. Is there a protecter with a longer that would fit? Bearing cones are L44649 and L68149. Standard protectors do not have sufficient length to clear the nipple.

It sounds like you have an EZ Lube type of spindle, that has a grease zerk on the spindle. You are correct that the standard grease caps do not provide the proper clearance for this style of spindle. With the bearing numbers that you provided I was able to determine that outer diameter of the grease cap that you will need is 1.986 inches. Then the correct grease cap fitting for your is the TruRyde EZ Lube Grease Cap # RG04-040.

These grease caps have a removable rubber center portion that will allow you access to the zerk fitting so you can properly lubricate your spindle, and bearings. This cap will extend an additional 7/8 inch from the hub face. I have included a photo that shows several dimensions of this grease cap for your reference.

These are sold in sets of two grease caps, so if you have a tandem axle trailer you may need to order additional grease cap set. Many of our customers and our installers recommend using the Dust Cap Driver Tool # 290-991 to ensure that the grease cap is installed evenly and without causing damage to the cap surface. I have included a short demonstration video of this tool for your reference
