To get your 2017 Ford Explorer (without the factory tow package) fitted with a brake controller I recommend installing the following:
Curt T-Connector 7-Way Trailer Connector - # C56306
Mounting Brackets - # 18138 and # C57202 (to secure the 7-Way to your hitch)
Curt Echo In-Line Wireless Brake Controller - # C79DR
According to my research the wiring for towing a trailer exists whether you have the tow package or not, but to install a brake controller you might need to cut and splice some wiring under your dash as opposed to a plug and play adapter. The Curt Echo In-Line tees in at the 7-Way trailer connector and installs under your vehicle which means you don't have to mess with anything inside your cab and it just makes the installation that much easier.
The Echo In-Line controller settings will be configured by using the Curt mobile app. Once the settings are in place you just need the app open so you have access to the manual override, or you can get the Manual Override Button # C83HR so you can put your phone away but still have this safety feature nearby.
I'm attaching some videos for you to check out.
