Installation Kit for Transferring Fifth Wheel Hitch From 1997 Chevy Silverado to 2010 Toyota Tundra

Question:

I want to upgrade my tow vehicle from 1997 Chevy Silverado to 2010 Toyota Tundra Double Door 6.5shortbed. What equipment would I need to transfer my Reese 16K/Slider Fifth Wheel Hitch and is it easy enough for me to do myself? I installed the original myself.

To install your hitch onto your Tundra, you will need the installation kit, part # RP50084-58. Since you installed the hitch onto your Silverado, you should be able to handle the install on the Tundra with no problem.

If you should find that the clearance provided by the slider is insufficient, I would suggest taking a look at the Sidewinder. The Sidewinder would replace the pin box on your fifth wheel trailer, and would provide 22 inches of additional clearance between the rear of the truck cab and the front of the trailer. The Sidewinder accomplishes this by relocating the pivot point between the truck and the trailer from the king pin/hitch connection to the trailer pin box.

If you decide to use a Sidewinder, it is important that the slider be left in the forward position while towing. Towing the trailer while the slider is in the rear position could lighten the front end of the towing vehicle to the point where steering response and braking is compromised, which would lead to a highly dangerous situation.
