Should the Prodigy RF Brake Controller be Paired When the Trailer is Loaded and Empty

Question:

Im considering this Prodigy RF for use with my utility trailer, pulled by a 2012 MB ML350 Bluetec. The height of the tongue is much lower with a load in the trailer than when empty. Im wondering if it will function properly when loaded if I pair it when empty, or if I need to pair it when loaded. As the load weights may vary significantly from time to time1,000-4,000 Lbs, do I need to re-pair it for each load?

If the ride height or angle of the Prodigy RF Brake Controller, # TK94FR, changes when your trailer is loaded, then the RF may need to be paired again. One way around this would be to keep your trailer level when it is loaded.

To keep the trailer level, I recommend using a weight distribution system. Weight distribution systems distribute the tongue weight of the trailer to all axles of the towing vehicle and trailer. It also reduces the amount of sag when towing. If you are interested in adding a weight distribution system, I recommend checking your owners manual or with a local Mercedes-Benz dealer regarding the use of a weight distribution system. Some vehicles are not rated weight distribution. I did some research on your 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 Bluetec, but I could not find any information regarding weight distribution.

If you find your vehicle is compatible with weight distribution, then you will want to choose a system based on the loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. Weight distribution systems typically have effective tongue weight ranges. For example, if the tongue weight of your trailer, when loaded, is around 400 lbs, then I recommend looking at a system like the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System, # RP66558. This system has a maximum tongue weight effectiveness of 600 lbs and it has integrated sway control.

If you want to tell me the tongue weight of your trailer, I would be happy to make a more specific recommendation. I have attached a link to all of our weight distribution systems and two help articles on weight distribution and tongue weight for you to check out.
