What is Rating of Axle that has GAWR of 6,090 lb and is 3 inch Diameter

Question:

Hello, I have a gooseneck trailer I’m trying to determine the true weight rating of the axles on. The trailer is a tandem axle 24’ flatbed. The data plate on the neck of the trailer shows that the GVWR is 14,000 pounds, but also shows that the GAWR is 6,090 pounds. The axles are 3” diameter spring-ride with 8 lug hubs. The hubs are Dexter, so I assume the axles themselves are Dexter as well. I was able to find a sticker on the center of the rear axle, but it is illegible. Is there any other way to determine the actual weight rating of the axles?

Helpful Expert Reply:

3 inch trailer axles typically will have axle capacities between 5,200 and 7,200 lbs. Since your trailer's VIN plate has a GAWR listed of 6,090 lbs that would be what each axle is rated for. The reason the GVWR is 14k though is because the axle setups themselves weigh a lot and their capacity does not also include the weight of the axle itself.
