Can a Trailer Connector Be Added On a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 To Bypass Smart Tow System?

Question:

I have a 2019 Sierra that the tow light harness has rotted wires it is in the shop again for repair I lose all power at the fuse box The wires are corroded I suspect the whole harness is defective. This vehicle has a smart tow system that senses a trailer when it is connected. Is it possible to bypass this system by connecting to the rear light harness like the old days and not create an issue. I am not concerned about not having the smart system I just want my lights to work. Thanks

You can bypass the factory trailer wiring by adding wiring which give you a separate 7-way connector on your 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. First you will want to use the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT which will allow you to gain the input from your tail light wiring by detecting power moving through the wiring. The kit includes a tester to verify which wiring the sensors need to attach.

Next you will need to add the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7. This will connect to the 4-way harness above and provide you with the wiring to connect a charge line and Brake Controller # RED52VR.

Be sure to consult your dealer about any warranty concerns as the smart trailer system used on the Sierra does inform the ECU you are towing and makes changes to shift points as well as other functions.
