Why Does the Buyers Products 3 to 2 Receiver Tube Adapter Reduce Weight Capacity

Question:

Hi there! I have an F-350 with a 3inch receiver. Looks like this is the adaptor to use to be able to use anything with a 2inch shank. The description notes, It will not change towing capacity requirements and I was wondering is that only applicable with the adaptor in flush with the hitch or is it also applicable with how the picture shows it with one pin to secure the unit to the truck then another pin in the extension to secure your hitch to the extension. Thanks for your help!

In regards to the Buyers Products 3" to 2" Receiver Tube Adapter part # 337RTA302 which is a great option for a Ford F-350, the adapter will actually reduce the towing capacity of the trailer hitch and vehicle while in use to 12,000 lbs of gross trailer weight and 1,200 lbs of tongue weight. The reason that this adapter reduces capacity is because it extends the connection beyond the receiver. If you're looking for a reducer which does not reduce capacity, I recommend the Trailer Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeves part # e33YR which can reduce the 3" to 2-1/2" or 2" and will not reduce capacity because it does not extend the connection.

They both accept a 5/8" diameter hitch pin but keep in mind it must be long enough for a 3" receiver. If you don't have one I like the Gen-Y Iron Grip Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin part # GY49FR since it has both anti-rattle and a lock or you can just get a standard one like the Curt Hitch Pin and Clip for 3" Hitches part # C21507.
