Comparing Curt MV Weight Distribution Hitches Versus Fastway E2 For Towing a 14' 5,000LB Trailer

Question:

I am wondering if the Curt 17050 WD hitch and the Curt 17057 WD hitch are actually different products. One is rated up to 8K, while the other is up to 14K. But when I look at all other details, including product weight, they are the same. Also, my trailer is fairly light, under 5K and only a 14ft trailer, but I am pulling with a light truck. Is there any issue buying the heavy duty WD hitch and using with a lighter trailer? I am currently leaning towards getting the 17050 because offically it is for lighter trailers, which is my application. I will be towing across the country and just want some help with crosswinds and such for such a long pull. Thanks!

The difference between the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17050 and the # C17057 is only their weight capacities which is increased by using stronger spring bars for the additional weight. The # C17050 is rated for trailers with a tongue weight of 500-600lbs and a total trailer weight up to 6,000lbs. The # C17057 is rated for trailer with a tongue weight of 1,000-1,400lbs and a maximum trailer weight up to 14,000lbs. You will want to make sure that the trailer weight falls into this range otherwise you can risk damaging the hitch or your vehicle. If you overload the bars they can bend and will no longer function properly to reduce sag on your truck. Using a hitch that is rated for more than the trailer can actually cause issues with transferring to much weight across the vehicle and reducing rear traction.

I recommend stepping up to the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0600 for your 14' trailer weighing under 5,000lbs. This hitch is rated for a trailer with a tongue weight of 250-600lbs and a maximum trailer weight up to 6,000lbs. It uses straight spring bars that are secured with pins rather than a spring tension catch that I have seen fail on the road and spring bar fall out. This hitch also includes sway control as the spring bars create tension with the frame brackets. This makes for a much safer drive as your trailer will not be blown around side to side while you are driving. You will need either a 2" # EQ91-00-6080 or 2-5/16" # EQ91-00-6100 Hitch Ball and a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the correct size ball for your coupler.
