How To Determine The Correct Hitch Extender For Towing A Boat Trailer With A Truck Bed Camper

Question:

i want a hitch extension for my GMC 3500 dually, 2022. I have just put a new Lance 1172 truck Camper on it. What type of hitch extension do you recommend for pulling a boat that would weigh with boat, motor and trailer about 2500- 3000 lbs?

Adding a hitch extender to your setup does reduce the tongue weight and towing capacity by 50% so we would need to find an extender that's rated around the 10,000lb range to be safe.

You'll also need to take into account the size of your Sierra's trailer hitch receiver opening and the length that you'll need to clear the truck bed camper.

If you had a 2" receiver opening then something like the Gen-Y Hitch Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches - 14" Long # GY89SR could be the solution (still dependent on the length).

Another option would be to replace your current hitch with a TorkLift SuperHitch Magnum Trailer Hitch Receiver # TL74FR, which has 2 receiver openings and would allow you to use a TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension Like part # TLE1528.

There's a few more SuperTruss options available as well at longer lengths if you're really needing to extend it out. If you can let me know the size of your receiver opening and the length you need to clear the camper I can narrow down the available options for you.
