Number of Electrical Circuits on Trailer With Electric Brakes
Question:
are there only 4 wires in the connecting cable when electric brakes are used on trailer ?

Expert Reply:
Typically, a trailer equipped with electric brakes will have either a 6 or a 7-way trailer connector. The 7-way is the most common. If you click the provided link, you can see side by side photos of both connectors.
A 4-pole or 4 wire connector like you describe would only provide trailer lighting functions.
If your trailer has electric brakes, and you want them operational, you will need to install a brake controller. The Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 would be an excellent choice. The brake controller would wire directly into existing wiring under the dash right below the steering column. I will link you to an install video that will walk you through the process.
