Choosing The Correct Blue Ox Sway Pro Distribution Hitch For A 2008 Dodge 2500

Question:

I just bought a travel trailer with an unloaded weight of 5748 lbs. and a gross weight of 6984 lbs. The unloaded hitch weight is 824 lbs. and the fully loaded gross weight hitch weight will be an estimated 998 lbs. I have a 2008 dodge 2500 diesel tow vehicle which will have some camping gear in the bed of the truck as well as an external 40-gallon fuel tank that looks like a truck box and is next to the cab. My question is, is the weight value of the bars based solely on tongue weight of the trailer or is it based on the tongue weight of the truck which will include the tongue weight of the trailer plus any weight added to the truck hitch from the stuff in the bed of the truck? Should I get the 1000 lb. bars or the 1500 lb. bars for the Blue Ox Sway Pro?

Yes, The weight value of the bars are based solely on the tongue weight of the trailer.

When choosing a weight distribution system you need to be as close as possible to the load tongue weight of the trailer. Being way under the tongue weight or way over the tongue will cause more sway problems then not having one at all. With that being said you would need The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 15,000 lbs GTW, 1,500 lbs TW # BXW1500.

The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution # BXW1000 has a loaded tongue weight between 700 pounds to 1,000 pounds, so if you went any higher in weight it would become dangerous.

This weight distribution hitch works well with tongue weights between 1,000 to 1,500 pounds. With your trailer being an estimated 998 pounds it would work perfect for you. This system allows backing up and has a clamp-on design with no drilling needed.
