A brake controller can be safely installed in a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500; I have never heard about a computer being fried but there is a bit of a different procedure relative to other trucks. So there isn't a problem that needs to be solved, if that makes sense, it just needs to be installed correctly, and it isn't overly complicated.
I have added links below to help articles which explain exactly what needs to be done. It just requires connecting wires to the fuse box under the hood, and you'll need a couple nuts to do so, a Hex Flange Nut - M6 # 185916 and Hex Flange Nut - M8 # 185917.
That said, the right parts will depend on if the truck has the factory tow package or not. If it does NOT you'll need to check to see if there is a bundle of wires up above the spare tire under the Chevy, or a round plug with a cap. If it is a bundle of wires you will need the Pollak 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector Socket # PK11898; if it is a a round plug with a cap you will need Replacement Custom Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connectors # 30955.
This will allow you to install a brake controller with its wiring harness, the Universal Wiring Adapter for Curt Trailer Brake Controllers # C51515 and Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV.
