Using Tire Chains with Snow Tires

Question:

Do snow chains have to go on snow tires or regular tires or does it matter ? Seems to me that snow chains mitigate the need for snow tires unless you need to travel over 50mph. Thoughts ??

Tire chains can be used on standard as well as snow tires. Driving above 30 or so mph with chains installed is not recommended, nor is using chains on dry pavement. So, if you are planning on driving above 50 mph, you are most likely traveling on bare pavement and would therefore want to remove the chains.

Snow tires offer some versatility, with no speed (within reason) or pavement restrictions, but keep in mind that in some mountainous areas, snow chains are required by law.

Assuming that you will be extensively traveling in wintery conditions, I would recommend using snow tires as well as having a set of chains available for emergencies.

I have linked you to an FAQ article that contains much more information about tire chains.
