Can The Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch Be Used In Reverse?

Question:

Does the hitch slide when you are backing into a tight spot. When I bought my 18k ford fifth wheel hitch. The salesman told me I didn’t need a slider when I asked. I haven’t encountered any problems going forward, it’s when I am backing up that the problems ensue with the trailer and the cab. Looking back on it the ford salesman didn’t have a clue. I was sold a bill of goods. Shame on me for not researching the hitch.

If you have the Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw # DM8550024 for your 2015 Ford F-350, then yes it should automatically slide back when reversing, as well as when making tight turns.

If your hitch is not sliding as it should then you may have an issue with gears inside the head and base assembly. Debris can sometimes get in there and block them, causing this issue, or the gears need greasing.

Worse case scenario the teeth on the gears are actually damaged and will need to be replaced, however I find that unlikely if you just purchased this hitch.

The instruction manual for your hitch is linked below, I recommend checking out pages 6 and 7 for some more detail about greasing and general maintenance.
