The Reese Custom Fit Replacement 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector, # 74682, will fit your 2012 Toyota Tacoma if it came with a factory 7-way. This is a replacement for the OEM 7-way trailer connector for the Tacoma.
If your Tacoma did not come with a factory installed 7-way trailer connector, then we will need to go a different route. If your truck does not have any trailer wiring installed, then you will first want to install a 4-way flat trailer connector. For this, I recommend the Curt Custom Fit T-Connector Wiring Harness, part # C55513. This wiring harness comes with connectors that will connect inline with your factory tail light wiring. I have attached a link to the installation instructions for you to check out.
If you already have a 4-way flat trailer connector, then you will not need to install the Curt T-Connector harness.
The next step would be to install a 7-way vehicle end socket. For this, I recommend using our Universal Install Kit with the 7-Way and 4-Way Adapter, part # ETBC7. This kit comes with everything you need to complete the installation of a 7-way trailer connector. I have attached the installation instructions for this kit as well as an installation video on a 2009 Toyota Tacoma for you to check out.
The # ETBC7 kit also comes with the wiring to install a brake controller. If the trailer that you plan to tow has electric brakes, then you will want to add an electric brake controller to use the trailer brakes. For a brake controller, I recommend looking at the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195. This is one of the top brake controllers on the market and has an LCD display to display power settings and trouble codes. The video I attached shows the installation of this brake controller as well.
