Parts Needed To Add Electric Brakes To Dual Axle 2017 Load Rite Pontoon Boat Trailer

Question:

Hello I’m Looking to add trailer brakes to my dual axel pontoon trailer. Current wheel set up is 175/80d13 5 lug. 2017 load rite trailer Assuming electric brakes would be the easiest. 99 of the time we are in fresh water. 1 or 2 times per year we go in brackish water. And the trailer and boat are rinsed right away. I already have a 7 pin connector and brake controller on my truck. Is there a kit that add brakes to this trailer? What is the best and budget friendly way to add brakes to this.

In order to add brakes to your dual axle pontoon trailer, you are going to need to know your axle capacity.

If you do not know the capacity of your axle, you can just measure the diameter of your axle.

Typical Axle Diameters Based on Axle Capacity:

- 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter

- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter,

- 6,000-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter,

- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter,

- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter,

- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter.

The most common axle size for these types of trailers is a 3,500lb axle, so you'd have a 2-3/8" diameter axle.

With that being said, you're going to then need to verify what mounting flange bolt pattern you have, wheel bolt pattern, and the bearing/seal information.

After all that is figured out, then you can use the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA, with the hub and drum assembly # AKHD-545-35-G-K.

Since you plan on using this with the water, then I recommend using butt connectors # DW05745-10 to protect your wiring, and be sure to unplug your trailer when launching your boat.
