2011 Toyota Tundra Platinum Towing 8,400 Pound Flagstaff 832IKBS Trailer Right At GCWR Capacity

Question:

I am towing a loaded trailer at about 8400s with a GCWR on the truck of 15,400. The trucks GVWR is 7,000. I am using a Husky round bar WD with 1200# bars and a friction sway control. I think I am pretty close to pushing it. Is this an appropriate setup for this trailer and TV? Thanks

You are right at the capacity of the truck based on the numbers you have provided and if you have other items loaded in the truck that you are not counting with the weight of the truck then you are most likely over capacity. The 1,200 pound weight distribution system you are using could also potentially be overloaded. If the tongue weight of the trailer plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle is greater than 1,200 pounds then a higher capacity system is needed.

What I recommend is to reduce the weight of the trailer as much as you can if at all possible. This will not only get you under the capacity of the set up but also prevent you from having to get a higher capacity weight distribution system.

If you do not already have a supplemental transmission cooler I recommend adding one and also looking into engine oil coolers and power steering coolers. These coolers are going to help engine and transmission components last longer than they would without them. Given the weight of what you are towing these are good preventative items that you can easily add to the truck and lessen the likelihood of something failing because of the tow weight.

You can use a combination cooler to take care of two functions at once by using # D15902. You can cool two fluids, I recommend oil and transmission fluid, with one unit. For a power steering cooler you can use # D12213 which is a popular cooler.

Adding these coolers will not allow you to tow more weight but they will help protect the vehicle from added stress related to towing. If removing some of the weight is not an option then either a slightly lighter trailer or higher capacity tow vehicle would be the way to go.
