Troubleshooting 12 Volts Always Present at the Brake Output Circuit of a 7-Way

Question:

I just installed a 5504 on my 1997 ford F350. I was testing the wires at the trailer connector on the truck before hooking it up to the trailer. I noticed that there is 12Vdc on the brake controller output when no brakes are applied on the truck and no trailer is connected. Is this normal when there is no trailer connected? I would think there would be 0 volts until the truck brakes are applied.

You are correct, you should not be seeing voltage on the brake output circuit of your 7-way all the time. I would check the wiring of the back of the 7-way and see whats going on. It sounds like the 12 volt accessory circuit may be wired to the brake output circuit, or its shorting out to it.

I also attached an FAQ article on troubleshooting brake controller installs for you to check out as well.
