Safety Chain Extenders and Replacement Chain Option For Extended Weight Distribution Hitch
Question:
I’m getting a new weight distribution hitch and I’m pretty sure I will have to extend the safety chains. I would prefer to replace the entire chains but my chains are threaded thru a loop welded to the trailer frame. Current chains are 5/16 43 proof 11,500 break. I would like to upgrade to 3/8 70 proof chain. What and how do you recommend attaching to the trailer frame. Current chain is thru a loop which is welded to frame.

Expert Reply:
Typically most trailer safety chains will be long enough for use with a weight distribution hitch. We do have the Wiring and Safety Chain Extension Adapter Kit # PR34QR that will help with certain extra long weight distribution hitches.
Since you have a Safety Chain Clip # 337SC38B welded to the frame you will need to cut your current chains from the clip to install a 3/8" 70 Proof Chain # 63451 like you are wanting. These chains are 36" long and can be attached with the Quick Links # 37201335 to your current loop.
