Can I Use a 10k Weight Distribution Hitch with a 4400 GVWR Camping Trailer

Question:

Hi, I bought a 10k distribution hitch so that I can use it on various trailers. If I put it on a camping trailer that is only 4400 lbs gross, will it damage the trailer? Thanks

It truly depends on the tongue weight rating of the weight distribution hitch that you have to know for sure. However, given large difference in gross towing weight capacities, the 10k weight distribution hitch most likely has a tongue weight range that is much too high for your 4400 gross weight rating on your camping trailer. With a range this large, the weight distribution hitch can cause much more issues than it will solve and can potentially damage the trailer. Since your trailer has a gross rating of 4400 pounds, you have approximately 440-660 pounds of loaded tongue weight. The 10k hitch you currently has most likely has a tongue weight capacity range that is too high compared to your needs.

For a better and safer fitment, I recommend a different hitch. With the 440-660 pounds of loaded tongue weight, a great option is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Round - 8,000 lbs GTW, 800 lbs TW # FA94-00-0800. With this system, you receive the firmness you need without it being incredibly tight. With this setup, the sway control bracket mounts 24" - 27" back from center of coupler. The brackets themselves are compatible with trailer frames up to 6" high.

As far as parts you need, the ball for the system needs to have a 1-1/4" shank like the 2" Hitch Ball - 1-1/4" Diameter x 2-5/8" Long Shank # C69FR. Also, to make the installation easier, I always recommend the thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800.

I went ahead and attached demo videos of all of these parts for you to check out.
