Minimum Safe Distance Between Tandem Trailer Tires on 2011 Palomino Sabre 31CKTS
Question:
My rig calls for tire size ST235/80R16E. I inadvertently installed ST 235/85R16E. I read your article regarding the very slight tire height difference. My question is how close is too close between the tires?. I have approximately 1/4inch gap between the tires. Will the tires swell and rub once heated up? Is this a safety concern?.

At a bare minimum you want 1" of clearance between the tires on your tandem axle trailer, more is better. You are correct, the tire can expand when it heats up which would definitely be a safety concern if your tires are rubbing together which could cause some serious issues. You will want to switch back to the original tire size which should give you the clearance you need to be safe.
For an ST235/80R16 replacement tire I recommend the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10248. This tire has a load range E with a 3,500 lb capacity at 90 psi. It as has an M speed rating for 81 mph. The Karrier comes with a 5-year limited warranty and a 1-year worry-free guarantee. If within the first 12 months the tire is damaged in any way, it will be replaced at no charge.
