How to Sanitize Fresh Water Tank in Used RV

Question:

I just got a used RV. I know I have to sanitize the fresh water tank but we are in a drought and the thought of all that water being thrown away is a problem. Is there a way to do it that doesnt waste all that water?

The most common way is to use bleach on fresh water tank, about 1/4 cup per 15 gallons and dump into an open container after flushing the system. If you have one of those kids pools, that would be perfect. Bleach rapidly degrades in the presence of light and when mixed with water. Let waste water set for 72 hours minimum in bright sun and the bleach will most likely be dissipated to the point that you can safely dispose of it on your lawn. Pour a portion on a section of lawn to test, wait overnight and examine the effects the following day. Proceed as situation determines of waiting further or pouring out the remainder on your lawn.

Once your tank is clean, I recommend using the Valterra Sodium Hypochlorite Drinking Water Freshener, # V03066. The Valterra drinking water freshener removes stale taste from water in your RV's holding tank and destroys microorganisms that cause bad taste in stored water. Along with the AquaFresh Exterior RV Water Filter Kit, # A01-1131VP.

Please note the linked product review video below and I have also linked a couple help articles for addressing black and gray water tanks. I hope you find the information to be of value.
