Recommended Weight Distribution System For OutdoorsRV BackCountry Series MTNTRX 28DBS Travel Trailer
Question:
First, I have a 2009 Dodge RAM 2500 with the Cummins diesel. I am planning on purchasing the OutdoorsRV BackCountry Series MtnTrx 28DBS. It has a tongue rating of 995, but Im sure that is without batteries or propane which would add another 200-280 lbs., depending on use of the full 4 battery capability and decent 6v golf cart type batteries. I believe that with additional load in the trailer that I might easily reach 1500+ lbs. so I believe I would need this hitch rather than the hitch rated for 1400 lb tongue weight. So, in your experience, are my estimations and concerns correct? What would be the lightest tongue weight that would be acceptable with this unit? Thanks for any help you can offer.

With the tongue weight of the OutdoorsRV BackCountry Series MtnTrx 28DBS being 995lbs dry you will be adding 80lbs of propane. If the dealer only ads a 24 Group Battery # BRW34FR that weighs 48lbs it will increase total tongue weight to 1,123lbs. If they add the four 6V Batteries # BRW74FR that weigh 66lbs each that will increase tongue weight to 1,339lbs.
I feel the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ64FR you are looking at is best for you as it allows for a tongue weight between 1,200-1,600lbs. With the large storage area in the rear of the trailer along with the 40 gallon fuel tank that will help to keep weight off the tongue to where this system will work well for you. Keeping a etrailer Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 with the camper will allow you to always check your weights and redistribute any weight necessary to ensure you do not exceed the limits of the system.
You will need a 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 to install the 2-5/16" hitch ball that comes with the Equal-i-zer hitch system.
