The LED light flashes on the Valley Journey brake controller that indicates that there is a short circuit somewhere. The trailer brake output circuit could be shorting to ground. Since this only happens when you turn on the headlights I suspect a dirty or corroded trailer connector on the vehicle or trailer if not both. Or it could be that the red brake controller wire is not attached to the correct brake switch wire (if the brake controller was hardwired).

First you will want to disconnect the truck and trailer. Check both connectors for dirt and corrosion and clean them out. Then check the backs of the connectors where the wires attach because corrosion can build up there too. After this is complete see if that fixes the issue.

If it does not then check the red wire connection. If hardwired, it should be attached to the brake switch wire that only shows power when you use the brake pedal. If the same wire also shows power when you turn on the headlights or turn signals it is not the correct wire.

I have included a link to our FAQ article on troubleshooting brake controller installations for you as well.
