What Is Needed To Flat Tow 2012 Fiat 500

Question:

Hi. I just bought a 2012 Fiat 500c. It has a Roadmaster base plate on it but, no “connection” parts. The holes in the front are 18” apart. I have no idea what else I’ll need to tow behind my RV? Appreciate any help.

With Roadmaster brand base plates installed on your 2012 Fiat 500 but missing the arms, you simply need to select Roadmaster Replacement Arms for Base Plate Kits, # RM-ARMS and scroll to the pdf of "Installation Details" to complete the form. Because Roadmaster (currently) only offers the # 522013-1A for your vehicle, this makes it easy to identify what your part number. But please verify against the tag on what is installed. If you are not only missing the arms but the cross bar too, you will additionally need the Replacement Quick Disconnect Crossbar Assembly for Roadmaster Motorhome Mounted Tow Bars, # 910021-00.

There are 5 basic components needed to flat tow any vehicle, the Base Plate Kit, Tow-Bar, Safety Cable, Wiring Solution and Supplemental Braking. Some vehicle set-ups require additional parts to supplement the basic items. Such as a high/low adapter to adjust the tow bar height or additional electrical items.

- Base Plates, Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit, # 522013-1A (Follow what is listed above.)

- Tow Bar, Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, # RM-520

- Wiring Solution, Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154 (If needed. Being purchased pre-owned and having previously used as flat tow, wiring solution may be installed.)

- Supplemental Braking, Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO, # SM99251 and the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit - Fiat
Item # RM-751455. I like this system because it is a one time setup and everything will be hidden once installed.

We always suggest that you refer to your vehicle specific owners manual before attempting to flat tow and ensure you follow manufacturer's guidelines. It is important that the installed tow bar sets within +/- 3" of being level otherwise excessive wear can occur to the vehicles suspension system and tires. Attached is an article that walks you through how to determine if a high/low adapter is needed and how to best make that selection if so, along with other information that will hopefully be of value.
