2 Wire to 3 Wire Tow Vehicle Taillight Adapter for 2006 Chevrolet Colorado

Question:

I am trying to wire up a 2006 chevrolet colorado to tow behind a motor home. I purchased a wiring connector and a connector with diodes no 48955. I think I also need and adapter to convert from three bulbs to two. I know I saw and read about what I need on your web site but I can not find it now. Can you help?

You definitely can use the 4 diodes you purchased, # 48955, to wire your 2006 Chevrolet Colorado to be towed behind your Motorhome. Along with the connector you purchased and the diodes you will need an appropriate length of Bonded 4 Wire, # 16-4B-1. I would recommend about 30 feet.

When wiring the taillights your brake and turn signal will use the same filament in the brake light bulb with a 4 diode kit. I have added a wiring diagram for you to make the process easier. To eliminate running a taillight wire the length of the vehicle twice you will use a jumper wire to go from the taillight connection on the left side over to the right side. I also added a video link for you to watch to see how this process is done. The vehicle is different but the wiring process is the same.

If you decide that you want the brake signal and turn signal to remain separate on the Colorado when it is being Dinghy towed then you would have to purchase a 6 diode kit with converter, # 154-792-118158. This would split the brake/turn signal and go from the motorhomes 2 wire wiring and add an additional circuit for the turn signals. This kit requires the converter to split out the brake/turn signal and requires the addition of 2 diodes for the extra bulb you will be powering. I tend to stay away from this kit because of the extra wiring involved but it is a good option when you have yellow turn signal lights and want them to function when towing. I added a diagram and video for this option for you too.
