Comparing Installation of Curt and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receivers for 2022 Subaru Forester
Question:
Why is there a difference in the heat shield modification between the Drawtite class 3 hitch vs. the Curt class 3 hitch ? The manufacturer has created the dimple area in the heat shield to allow for creating holes for the bolt attachment.

The steps for installation for the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76271 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13409 are based on what each manufacturer found to work best for installing the hitch they designed. They are not 100% identical so it is important to follow the steps depending on which hitch you have.
The Draw-Tite # 76271 requires the trimming of the heat shield as outlined in step 3 of the instructions and also requires you to leave out the rearmost M6 bolt on the frame rail for the heat shield. The Curt # C13409 actually gives two options. The first is to leave the heat shield off. The other is to drill the clearance holes in the dimple and reinstall the heat shield without the rear most frame attachment.
Both hitches are a good option with the same capacity so if you would rather drill the holes I would choose the Curt. I have attached installation videos as well as the written instructions for both that you can check out.
