Parts Needed To Install Trailer Brake Controller On 2021 Toyota RAV4 Adventure

Question:

I am getting a 2022 Toyota Rav4 adventure model. I want to install a 7 way RV trailer connector onto it. I am considering either the Tekonsha 90920 Prodigy iD, or the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty. I have come into a scenario I would like to request help on. I am very aware that brake signal back-feeding into the car may cause error lights in the cluster to light up. With modern vehicles assistance systems, is it better to source the brake input for the brake controller to come from a rear brake lamp source, as in from the rear? I do not mind running this wire to the front. I am aware of this vehicle being the same from 2018+ however I can not find a clear answer on how best to source the brake input signal for a controller on this car. Or is it still better to go to the brake switch? my understanding is I would need a diode? my brake switch has about 8 wires.

The best place to connect the red brake signal wire of a trailer brake controller to a vehicle is the cold side of the stop light switch. There are some vehicles where this can be difficult, so Tekonsha has previously mentioned that running it to a third brake light is a perfectly acceptable alternative. The stop light switch or third brake light wire both have 12 volts. Since you are concerned about potential error lights on your 2021 Toyota RAV4 this would be a good solution.

You will need to to use some # 16-1-1 to run from the trailer brake controller wire to the brake light wire, and use a circuit tester # PTW2993 to find the correct wire to splice in to.

In order to install a 7-way on your RAV4 you will need to start with a 4-way like the # C56434. Once you have installed the 4-way, you will be able to use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7. This kit comes with an adapter, wiring, and everything else you need to upgrade your 4-way to a 7-way.

For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. The main unit fits behind the dash and is smaller than the # TK49VR so it will be easier to install. The control knob is also smaller, which I prefer, but the trade off is that it doesn't have a screen built in. You will also need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # RED69FR for installation.

I have attached some review and installation videos for your reference.
