Recommended Hitch and Weight Distribution System for 2000 Dodge Ram Pickup
Question:
Bought a truck with a reciever that only has 1000lb tongue limit 10k tow weight with a distribution hitch. We’re looking at a 9700 lb. camper with a 910lb tongue weight. Is that pushing the limits of that reciever and should upgrade it to a Curt from ya’ll? What sway control or dist hitch would uou reccomend? The truck is a 2000 dodge diesel 2500.

If the tongue weight (TW) is 910 lbs. and gross vehicle weight 9,700 lbs. you are definitely on the upper edge of its rating. Being a 20 year old hitch I suggest you thoroughly check the weld integrity at minimum. But replacing the hitch is the safest call and provides you the opportunity to install a hitch with a higher rating.
I suggest the Class V, B&W Heavy-Duty Trailer Hitch Receiver, # BWHDRH25132. This 2" x2" hitch fits trucks with either an 8 foot or 6-1/2 foot bed with standard or step bumper. This has a maximum gross trailer weight of 16K, with or without a Weight Distribution System (WDS). The max Tongue Weight (TW) is 1,600 lbs. with or without a WDS. Safety chain loops are built in and an electrical bracket is included for mounting your 7-way trailer connector. This is a bolt-on installation, no welding required and there are grade 8 mounting hardware included
For WDS system, I suggest the Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control, # C17500. This is rated for tongue weight between 800 lbs. and 1,000 lbs. The active sway control keeps your trailer in line by using specific tension points and steel-on-steel resistance. The system head has 5 preset adjustment options to choose from so you can easily achieve the proper tilt and there a 2-5/16" ball included. This system includes head assembly, adjustable shank, spring bars, active sway control brackets, chrome hitch ball, pins and clips, and all necessary hardware.
